Malung-Sälen
One of Swedens most significant tourist destinations

Malung-Sälen is a municipality renowned for its exceptional skiing, thanks to its stunning mountains that provide ideal conditions. The destination is now entering a new phase of internationalization with the establishment of Scandinavian Mountains Airport, enhancing global connectivity.
Northern Europe’s largest skiing destination
Sälenfjällen is Northern Europe’s largest ski area and one of Sweden’s most significant tourist destinations. During the high season, around 80,000 skiers hit the 116 slopes every day, and the destination attracts 1.5 million visitors annually. The ski resorts are constantly investing in new accommodations and creating destinations that offer guests richer, more sustainable experiences. Destination Sälenfjällen is the joint development company for the region’s tourism industry, where more than 100 companies and organizations collaborate to drive growth and development.
“The destination has 1.5 million visitors annually.”
Scandinavian Mountains Airport and Scandinavian Mountains Railway
The destination is growing and to improve accessibility to the mountain region, Scandinavian Mountains Airport was inaugurated in 2019. The airport project was a private initiative and a unique collaboration between two countries, four municipalities, and four destination companies with 435 member companies. With this unique and successful example of collaboration, the stakeholders of the destination are now taking the next step together. To support both increased accessibility and sustainable tourism, stakeholders are once again joining forces in a new project - to promote a future Scandinavian Mountains Railway.
Leatherworking and premium timber
Malung has a proud heritage in leatherworking, and the expertise lives on. During its peak, Malung was home to over 100 companies in the leather industry; today, only a smaller number remain. These companies continue to uphold the values of design and quality, rooted in a strong tradition of craftsmanship. One good example is Jofama, the leading Scandinavian outfitter and producer of leather goods, founded in Malung 1926.
Skinnfolket, a cooperative of local companies, represents the entire industry chain—from raw materials and production to retail, craftsmanship, repairs, and even a two-year program in leather fashion design. Through collaboration and focused marketing, Malung continues to uphold its tradition and reputation as a Leather Metropolis.
Another important business in the municipality is Fiskarheden, that was founded in 1923 and is currently one Sweden’s largest sawmills. But today the group Fiskarhedenkoncernen is not just a high-tech sawmill. In addition to its sawmill operations, Fiskarheden includes a real estate company, a component and window factory, as well as construction and contracting businesses.
