Falun
Welcome to the capital of Dalarna
Falun is a vibrant and multifaceted municipality that truly has it all: provincial capital, world heritage city, university town, culinary hotspot, music hub, industrial center, and sports mecca. Here, world-class sports arenas, international companies, niche businesses, renowned restaurants, Dalarna’s largest hospital, and one of Sweden’s 15 UNESCO World Heritage Sites coexist in harmony.
A city with history—and a vision for the future
Falun’s rich history is undeniable, and we’ll share more about that below. But Falun is equally focused on the future, investing in education and sustainability. From training tomorrow’s game developers to hosting cutting-edge, climate-friendly data centers, innovation thrives here.
Shaping the game industry of tomorrow
Sweden ranks among the world’s top producers of computer games, and the industry is growing at an explosive pace. Success comes from creativity and strong educational programs - something Falun has embraced wholeheartedly. At the heart of the city is PlaygroundSquad, a leading vocational school that fast tracks students into the global gaming industry.
Home to one of the world’s most sustainable data centers
Falun’s central location in Sweden offers an ideal climate for green data centers, with easy access to Stockholm and Arlanda International Airport. Founded in Falun, EcoDataCenter opened its first facility in 2018 and is pioneering a new generation of sustainable data centers. Built with wood and powered by renewable energy, these centers combine world-leading technology with environmental responsibility.
Where it all began: deep underground
The Falu Mine was once one of Europe’s largest and most important copper mines. At its peak in the 17th century, Falun supplied two-thirds of the world’s copper ore. Mining ceased in 1992, but the site successfully transformed into one of Sweden’s most popular tourist destinations. In the early 2000s, the mine and its surroundings earned UNESCO World Heritage status. Today, Falun is once again attracting interest from mining companies, with exploration permits granted to both Swedish and international firms.
A community in motion
Falun’s residents are active and engaged, thanks to the region’s natural beauty and exceptional facilities. The city has hosted numerous international sporting events, including the FIS Nordic World Ski Championships in 2015 - and will proudly host them again in 2027
